Senior cats: 11 to 14 years

From 11, a cat is a senior — about 60 in human years, reaching 72 by age 14. Many seniors are comfortable and fully themselves; senior care is mostly about catching slow changes early and quietly making the house easier to live in.

What the senior stage is like

Sleep increases, play shortens, and high jumps may quietly disappear from the routine. Some seniors become more affectionate and lap-oriented; others get a bit grumpier about change. Coat quality can slip because grooming takes flexibility a stiff cat no longer has. None of these alone means illness — together, or suddenly, they are worth a vet visit.

Care priorities

Before this stage: Mature (7–10 years). After it: Geriatric (15+), where comfort becomes the whole agenda. For lifespan context, see how long cats live.

Common questions

How old is a 12-year-old cat in human years?

About 64 — a senior in the human retirement-age bracket, though plenty of 12-year-old cats are still spry.

Should a senior cat still get vaccinations and check-ups?

Generally yes, on your vet’s schedule. Preventive care matters more, not less, when the immune system and organs have less reserve — but the exact plan is individual, which is what the twice-yearly visit is for.
